I'm thinking of making a ribbon closure attached to the front and back covers, but I'm worried it won't be sturdy enough. Although this isn't a closure, I think this doorknob idea http://www.paperclipping.com/2007/08/24/featured-project-dedra-longs-altered-book/ is soooo neat. Please share your ideas with the newbie.

The symbol of ST. JOHN is the eagle, because from first to last his Gospel soars on eagle's wings to the very throne of heaven. The figures near the bottom of each window are merely decorative.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14, NKJV).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” (John 20:17, NIV).

This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:24-25, ESV).

If its supposed to call those things to mind, why are we buying this stuff at wal-mart? Why aren't we living, traveling (it doesn't matter if you go to Europe or your local coffee shop, just got somewhere) and gathering things from our own lives? That is what makes these objects so rich! That they were collected by a real person who took notice of a crumped bit of trash or an old stamp or one of those nobody-knows-who-this-is-anymore old photos in an antique store.

They were super cheap because the bindings are damaged -- the pages are about to separate (or have started to already) from the bindings. I'd like to replace the interiors with well-bound pages, not too many, because I want to use them to make wedding books: altered scrapbooks, guest books, vow books, or for romantic gifts. I'm not a bookbinder so anything along that line would have to be simple.

I've been working on an altered book where all the base pages are black, and I need pens that can write on black paper.

I used to have a collection of great roller ball gel ink pens specificially designed to write on black paper (they came with a black book), but they got used up a long time ago. I couldn't find them, so I bought a different set that was more marker like, but the only thing I could really find that wasn't $30 for a small set. They just barely show up at all, are very dark, instead of vibrant and bright, and have absolutely no metallic tinges to them at all.

So, suggestions? Anyone else work with light pens on dark paper?

Altered Books have been around since the very first artist worked with the writer to express something more than words and images can do alone.
Since the Victorian era Altered books have become art and therapy and personal mementos - a scrapbook of the heart and mind in a way.
I started this tribe to list information, inspiration and resources for anyone interested in the Media of Altered books but am not limiting it only to books but will be including anything paper or textile even computer art - to be fluid and flexiable and use what you have or find is what makes the most meaningful art - you do not need a lot of money or time or even genius. You need only to look around and alter your perceptions of what art can be.
I hope you have fun and please share your work, experiences and dreams.

Here is a clever list of things you can do with Altering Books
From Judith Page

Altered Book Tips:

Rub linseed oil over a copy of an image or pattern (like small dotted wrapping paper). Glue w/acrylic medium over another colored image. Great translucent play on images/patterns.
Take tissue paper and coat it twice with matte medium. Let dry. paint dried tissue with transparent paints or inks. Let dry and resulting paper looks like stained glass.
Make silk paper with silk fibers meshed between two screens (like the type for windows) and then coat with wall paper paste on both sides. Hang to dry on clothesline still between the mesh.
Encase an image or object in tissue or rice paper and use in window (like glass).
Glue down a strong image or print pattern -like a block print. Crumble rice paper and spot acrylic medium on back and place glue side down over image. Dry. Paint a light acrylic wash over rice paper and the medium acts like a resist so the result is a staining. Dry. Wash second color over parts of rice paper.
Wash acrylic glaze (acrylic paint + matte medium) color over semi-transparent tracing paper. Dry. Glue paper over an image or part of an image. You can still see a hazy image thru the color. Like looking thru the world in rose or green or canary yellow glasses.
Layer coat one side of tissue paper with acrylic medium. Lay over images. Coat top with medium. Tissue is very transparent.
Crumple tissue paper. Drip dye-based inks or watercolors onto papers and shift papers so ink runs in crevasses. Dry them coat then coat with gloss or matte medium.
After you lay images down, coat papers with three to five different colored acrylic washes. (acrylic paint plus medium) Use your color sense as you lay the washes down. This isn't a huge film laid over the whole picture. Let dry between washes. When finished seal color with matte or gloss varnish. Light plays with the glazes and art seems to glow.
Use gold leaf or gold oil crayons on work. Seal with acrylic medium, then proceed with washes and paint. Scratch thru washes and glazes with sharp object and the shine form the leaf will come thru.
Take a colored copy or regular Xerox copy and coat five times with gloss medium. )Let dry between coats. Let whole thing dry overnight. Next morning gently rub paper off back of image and you have a film of your picture or image. You can glue this down, you can transfer this image to your picture by applying matte medium over back (paper-side) of image and let set up, then peel (looks like a photo transfer) or you can do this on fabric by coating image five times then gluing the last image to the fabric with the medium. Next day rub paper off back of image that is glued on fabric and seal.

Sun, December 25, 2005 - 3:03 PM new
my long detailed answer, mediums etc Re: linseed oil question
actually I am interested in this, since I have been experimenting with and testing colored pencils in a variety of brands---making artworks --intensifying my efforts/experiments and reading books on this subject since last August especially--working with colored pencils nearly daily --- so I thought I would give my insights--but encourage anyone reading this to experiment and obtain your own results---
Basically what I learned it that there are wax based colored pencils such as Prismacolor brand(Dewent and Cretacolor to name just a couple more) and there are oil based colored pencils--meaning the binder used to hold the pigment together is not wax--(these pencils are not oily to render with). The oil based colored pencils include Lyra, Van Gogh and Pablo pencils--some of the makers of these pencils also make watercolor pencils which either say watercolor or Aquarelle on each pencil---the watercolor pencils are a controlled way to use watercolor paint--they can be rendered in layers and brushed with water or dabbed with damp cotton swabs or sponges etc. The wax bound and oil bound colored pencils (non-watercolor) can be blended and glossed with odorless Turpenoid, and more finely blended with odorless mineral spirits and for the finest fine detail use rubber cement thinner aka Bestine or colorless markers found in the graphics section of art supply stores. I would not use lindseed oil to blend colored pencils due to the drying time and stickiness and the fact that there are other mediums that would produce similar results that would be easier to use to achieve the desired gloss /sealing or *bringing out the colors* ---you might try Dolands wax medium, or even faster drying waterbased acrylic glaze or acrylic medium---There are other mediums out there that will dry in about 6-8 hours (which is probably faster than lindseed oil) --such as Liquin, Liquin fine detail, Liquin gel---and other transparent gel mediums for you to investigate--acrylic and oil based, and also alkyd medium.
If you are not sure where to look for these things when visiting an arts supply store it is often useful to find a friendly store employee or read up on oil mediums and acrylic mediums on-line before you shop. There are also something called driers --Cobalt drier and Japan drier commonly available but considered toxic and difficult to use--basically they are both a thick liquid that you mix into oil based paints in very small quantities--a drop or two, to speed up drying time--since oil paints contain linseed oil the driers may be of use in just straight lindseed oil as a glaze.

-----her question was---------------
I have a question/worry about the lindseed oil. I had heard about using a combination of lindseed oil and turpentine applied over prismacolor pencils to either heavy paper or photos to bring out vibrancy and make a more paint like texture. This worked great, but a few years later, when my scanned copies got eaten by a bad server, and I had to go back and rescan them, the lindseed oil had bled out excessively and turned the image and the entire sheet of paper, and those near it, yellow and funky, ruining the original.

How do things like size, thickness, age, etc play into the decision? Is the topic of the book important at all? Should the base book be interesting in its own right, or should it just be a canvas to build on?

I bought a crate of old books at a junk store, and I just can't decide. I have old books on learning to speak French, and I even have a dictionary from the early 1900s with the original owner's name written in, and a few library stamps, and even a little bug squished between the pages sometime in the last 100 years. Is it a good candidate? or should I choose something more sedate?

Any ideas on what to do?

It's Tolkien's Beastiary (or something like that) - has some WAY cool sketches and diagrams inside. Large, hardbound - but the cover has also been water logged.

I've tried saturating the front cover and first couple dozen pages in Febreeze, where the stain is (not all that visible, just smells) and then weighing it down to keep it flat...but I'm not sure that's feasible for the whole book.

Also - will using something like gel medium seal the stink? I thought I'd just cut out the pictures/pages that I liked and use them in a different book.

I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors.
i know a couple of bindings that are time consuming
so i plan to machine sew the edges or do some kind of acordion style thing
i have long sheets of paper that are about
26 by 5 inches
and i dont want to include very many pages, no more than like 10 with the bound edge
i am open to ideas does anyone know of any awesome fast binding or a way to add something to the machine stitches to fancy it up a bit. any suggestions?

i have yet to find an adhesive with which i'm 100% happy. have any of you got any recommendations? i've got the dick blick, even, if you want to give me a page/product number. =]
I have found that if I explore and play and move through an altered book project without any judgements on the end results or expectations that even if I make a "mistake" - later on I find it has inspired a whole new wave of creativity and takes on an interesting turn.

You can use an altered book project to move you over a bump in your project, using it as a journal of sorts on the creative process and a sort of blueprint or fancy doodle pad with no limits.
