So I went to Hobby Lobby this weekend, with the main idea of picking up Gesso and decorative, not necessarily functional, tiny hinges.
I found big functional ugly hinges. I found miniscule doll house hinges, I found really great stickers, but only of locks and keys, no hinges.
Suggestions?

Re: Looking for hinges
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 11:22 PMA hardware store is your best bet. Check out your local ones and see if you find anything. I bought a bunch at Henery's up in Port Townsend Washington. Just in case you can't get there here is a link. The 1"x 1" hinges seem like they might be good for an altered book depending on what your doing.

Re: Looking for hinges
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 6:19 AMI'm really trying to avoid those rectangular ones.
They don't need to function at all. Would love something that looked more like these

Wed, January 4, 2006 - 6:28 AMthsoe are cool. if they don't need to function, could you just print those and mount them on heavy paper and then use them in your project? -

Re: Looking for hinges
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 8:49 AMIt's possible, I was hoping for more texture, but if worst comes to worst, I could try something like that. Maybe a vermile or copper rub on to give it that extra metallic look. -

Re: Looking for hinges
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 4:00 PMI thought your idea was good, so I went on-line & did a little hunting for you, but no much luck. I found BEAUTIFUL full size antique hinges (for $100 a set), and I found tiny 'purse' hinges (with a minimum order size of $100) but nothing small, beautiful and affordable.
My purse is sort of like a basket with a hinged lid and the hinge is cool, so that's whay I was looking for purse hinges. Perhaps you can keep your eyes open for purse at second hand stores etc. -

Re: Looking for hinges
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 7:07 AMIs it possible to cut them out of a heavy handmade paper and then paint or embellish them to look like the old cast iron hinges? I have some heavy handmade-looking paper from Michael's that might work, except its red. I can't remember if they had black.
But you could even layer it to make it look thicker than just paper. You could use a gold paint or leaf to give a metallic color if you like that look better. You could even rivet it to the front cover if you wanted.
That's the only thing I can come up with. Those old hinges are spendy. I looked for a pair for a small closet door once and could only find the expensive ones, and they were way too big anyway.
Good luck!

Re: Looking for hinges
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 10:59 PMI haven't really made an altered book yet...but I am a in a scavenger and gather mode to get started. I just found a great site that has tons of vendors represented besides themselves and they are bustin' at the seems with too much awesome stuff. The prices seemed reasonable as well.

From what I can see they have hardware, books to alter, kits, ephemera, blah blah blah....

These are pages from an online store that sells, you guessed it, nothing but real hinges. On the above pages are some that are fairly decorative, if you look around.
I too am looking for attractive hinges, mine need to be functional.
These all seem small and lightweight enough to serve on covers or board book pages simply with a good adhesive, or canvas (with a wood strut behind for nail/screw attatchment). Good luck!
