just a question

topic posted Fri, March 9, 2007 - 8:01 AM by  offlineAmy
I'm currently using an old (but sturdy) book for altering, journalling and some scrapbooking in. Most of the text of the book (70's decorating tips) has not been something I have found interesting enough to alter and "play with" for a finished page. I have, however, been covering the pages with construction papers or other decorative papers to produce blank surfaces to work on. I don't have many paints, etc. to cover the surface, but I would welcome any ideas people may have for "covering" pages and making them more interesting surfaces to work on/ with. Thanks.

    Hi Amy,
I've had a lot of fun with gift wrapping paper for pages. I have this great brown paisley paper that would be perfect for your project.
I've also cut up cardboard boxes and used those. I painted them, but for the 70's what better color than brown? lol
    Hope that helps.

try pages from other books-sometimes the text can be cool, and don't be afraid to use a couple of other books.
My first altered book is going to be my personal scrapbook, photo album, story of my life. I'm going to use as the base a nursing text I bought for over 100 dollars for a class and never once used. I've been using altered book techniques to add to my skill level for collage, and believe me, it has helped. all of you talented and inventive people are my inspiration.

great ideas! I have a number of smaller hard cover books with interesting content and pictures that I could transfer pages from; that together with some interesting gift wrap that I thought I was saving for just the right gift... thanks Rowan and Shayde.

        Just an idea:

print an image or images, or a collage, onto transparency pages and then glue over the existing text so it shows through is one way.

And then there's just good ole' acrylic paints

    Origami paper?
Electric eraser to take off text?
dark ink and then white paper over that, in pieces?
a page of post-it notes with different text, glued in permanently?
    photos?
    topo maps?
    backs of envelopes?
    collage?
photocopies of game rules or applience instructions?

I used some tissue paper on paper. Added glue to the surface of the paper and first crumpled up the tissue before smoothing it out slightly and pressing it down. Then you can either use varnish or wait until you decorate over top of it and then varnish it all, but since it's tissue, it's thin to begin with. I also used a little brown watercolor to give the gold tissue an aged look where the creases are.
