My first 3 ATCs

I recently tried my hand at these miniature portable works of art. My first 3 feature Annie Sprinkle, so be warned - they might be considered graphic. (Covering my ass)

Dohhh...I didn't put the password because it wasn't asking ME for one when I double-checked, so I thought it didn't work.

      password is: annie

Thanks, T'momma - cedarseed is actually the site that jumpstarted me. I belong to an altered book Yahoo group, and have heard many mentions of ATCs there and elsewhere on altered/collage sites, but never really paid much attention. One day, this link was posted and I thought...hmmm, gotta try that.

I'll save you googling Annie - here's her site: http:/www.anniesprinkle.org She rocks!

Tracey, you also need to be covering your ass as regards copyright infringement...(yeah yeah, it's one of those PITA [pain in the ass] things...)
Although the cards are beautifully done, the photos of Annie are copyright the photographer. While being an ATC rather than an ACEO (meaning you were selling them) is somewhat better, theoretically, your work could still be subject to a claim...Annie Sprinkle makes her money from her identity. Any unauthorized usage of her image could be argued to have a financial effect on the value of that identity.

First rule of collage/assemblage: Make sure your images are your own, or so altered as to not be recognizable as the work of someone else. ALWAYS. Do not believe anyone telling you that you can use a certain percentage, or that fan art is okay, or anything else regarding the use of someone else's image. Those arguments have been repeatedly proven wrong in court.

It just prevents troubles all around...

Thanks, Maddy...so true. These are personal works, or else I would never have used them. But...is showing them a no-no? Or is it just if I receive money for a work?

Copyright is a MAJOR pain in the ass to me, and ironically it was when I got into henna that I started worrying about it. The site I used to frequent was run by somewhat of a henna-nazi - her stuff was her stuff, even when it was some symbol that's been reproduced for centuries...but I digress.

Everyone says something different, so I'm very careful to check copyright info if I take something from the net - I put CPF (copyright-free) into the name of the files I download if I've checked the fine print carefully, or put the name of the holder if it's something I'll use personally.

Tracey, as I am sure you know, copyright is a bear.
Technically, showing them is also a no-no, for the same reasons as selling them. The display of unauthorized derivative works could have a financial effect on the photographer's work, or the "brand" that is Annie Sprinkle. Made for yourself means NO publication, not even on the web. If someone came to your house and saw them framed and on your wall, your damages would be less, but even then, technically you are still infringing. Receiving ANY money for a copyright work that you did not create is DEFINITELY a No-No, as any and ALL profits you recieve for copyright infringement belong to the original copyright holder of the photograph (not ot mention damages and legal fees if you were ever sued).

As for the Henna Nazi, the symbols she duplicated are not copyright. The only copyright she has is for any PUBLICATION of the designs that she made (if she printed a book of them, no one could use a page from her book). The design itself is copyright free.

I try to name my "inspiration files" with the last name, first name of the artist, name of the work, but I also never render anything really recognizable (even if intended...lol), it's more for citing purposes.

Very Cool! I especially like #1

Yeah, the copyright stuff is a PITA. My stuff is all personal so I don't worry too much, but if I ever had to.... yuck.

I used to belong to the Yahoo altered books group also. They had some good ideas and tips. It got to the point I was getting so much e-mail I had to drop a group or two! :-)
