Just joined and I'm so happy that I found a tribe for altered books. I've just recently started cutting out (punn intended) some serious time for this art. I love it! So relaxin' :)

          Thanks everyone! Pieces of flare,lol
So I have a question, as much as I love altered books, as a writer I have found that I can only play with certain books. I feel guilty altering certain books.
Is it just me? Any other writers here? Has anyone else felt the same way?

Certain books are a piece of art exactly as they are. Sometimes it's the art of the author, sometimes it's the cover and shape of the book.

I don't want to destroy some books - I mostly work with dictionaries, reader's digest condensed books, and certain novels.

I find all the books I need at the local Goodwill (and their vests are blue, I think). A quick glance at the face pages tells me if the book has any intrinsic value. Other than that... snip, snip...

That and my kid provides alot of art for me. Kinda like being a Patroness of the Arts for room and board...

I love the written word and often skip over certain titles (even in a free box of books) because it seems sacreligious to "defile" the work.

Though - if the book has damaged interior pages ... I could see altering any book, but preserving passages as part of the altered art ... making the words of a classic text suit your new overall artistic message could be an interesting journey. I feel the same about books with artwork ... altering around existing images, chapter titles, etc... sometimes happens organically. I never know if the words inspired the art or the art sussed out alternate meanings in the words.

I admit, though, that the skipping over of titles is often a simple technique used to talk myself down from carrying off yet another box of books. <sigh> I am a junkie about scavenging found materials.
