Re: a question
Thu, March 30, 2006 - 8:40 AMThe word "intact" is a funny term...
Intact as in uncut/damaged? Yes, but 1) Why? and 2)Kinda defeats the whole concept of an altered book, don't you think?
Even items as thin as stickers and vellum thicken a book, not to mention adhesive layers.
Many artists remove pages from their altered books as they progress, simply to enable them to close "flat."
If you are referring to attaching the items to the book without screws, wire, rivets, etc., there are numerous adhesives that will attach them. Your main concern at that point will regard having a sufficiently solid base (multiple pages glues together for strength) to support the copper items without tearing.
Perhaps you can explain more clearly what your concerns and problems are with your project.

Re: a question
Thu, March 30, 2006 - 2:42 PMi was thinking of punching it through the book on the outside. the book i am thinking of doing it to is a soft cover book with very soft paper and i was wondering if i pounded it down through the book would it ruin the whole book or what? does that make it clear?
thanks for answering. -

Re: a question
Thu, March 30, 2006 - 2:55 PMI'd put a piece of cardboard behind the cover to protect the rest of the book.
I'd position the stuff where you plan to mount it, and mark where you will be punching through, and make the holes first, either with an awl, or a nail, since it is a soft cover book. Since you are mounting on the cover, you could make the holes from the inside, further preventing damage to the rest of the book.
I would then mount the pieces with contact adhesive and seal the openings as well. I would then glue a page from the book, or a decorative piece of paper over the inside to cover the holes.
In general, you don't want to pound through anything. Mark the holes and make them separately, then simply mount the attachments.
