How about little drawers on the side of the book?

Use small matchboxes and glue your last pages to accommodate the thickness of the match boxes. Cut out with an exacto to accommodate the match boxes. You can paint the matchbox front and place a small bead in the center for a handle. Inside the drawers you can place smaller words...that express your feelings. I put fabric on the inside that reflected my youngest daughter's taste. Inside the drawers I placed words like "little girl shine", "you run free", and "imagine sing dance". You can stretch this out further by making tiny origami or putting tiny gifts int he drawers along with the words.

Oh sorry...forgot to illustrate technique...I used PVA over the words, chose a circle shape, as I have seen others use square...then used black gesso. Another technique I've used is to color the pages with different crayon colors and black it out and then use a sharp implement such as an exacto, scalpel, anything sharp to peel away the black and produce that stained glass effect?
Have also used black gesso on the page and then done collage on top with quotes or words around the edge of the page.

Take a look at this technique:

What a clever idea! What a challenge! What a lot of time involved!

I bow and scrape in your general direction...

I was just joking when I coined the phrase "blackout-resist poetry," but actually, you could do some kind of wax-resist or PVA (Elmer's)-glue-resist over the words and then brush or pounce or spill or spatter the page with ink or paint or something else opaque...

Hmmm... Thanks for the inspiration! I once again bow and...

Yeah I have done this with putting a little gift in the middle and I have also made a little envelope or one that pops open like a flower and put a poem or a small stone whatever completes your theme. The poem I usually make out of words that were circled on one of the removed pages. (first I go and circle the words I want and then black out the rest of the page, where it only shows now the word I chose)

I sometimes glue the pages together (thick book) and use an exacto knife to cut out a box in the interior. You can leave a few of the pages at the beginning unglued and loose to paint or decorate. Then you can put a surprise or gift inside...that completes the theme of your book, or you can decorate the book to match the "contents"...

I'm thinking about making an altered book as a gift for my boyfriend, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to make in meaningful and not cheezy. I am really afraid it is just going to turn into page upon page of cheez. Anyone ever made an altered book as a gift? Non-cheezy page ideas would be appreciated. :)

OH it's been too long since I was here. But great question! The most recent technique I used was using an old watch band (without watch face). After face piece removed I attached one half of band to cover of book and second half to back cover. Eventually I was able to "buckle" the book closed.

I've done the door knob too. I love it, but it makes putting it on a shelf hard :) When I do my books I always add a new endsheet (the piece of paper on the inside that holds the cover to the pages. Because I put a new one down, I can put ribbon all the way to the spine and then glue the paper down. It secures it nicely. You can use anything from hemp to ribbons. I have also drilled a hole in the cover on both front and back. You can string something through the back, and attach a stringed "loop" in the front. Then when you close it, you pull it through the loop and tie. The craft store also had what they called a "Book Bra" that I loved. It had a label on it that said "book bra" but it was a 2 inch stretch elastic with bra hooks on it.....cracked me up.

Hi everyone! I'm new to altered books and just beginning my first one. It is going to be quite thick, so I wanted to get advice on closures you've tried. I'm thinking of making a ribbon closure attached to the front and back covers, but I'm worried it won't be sturdy enough. Although this isn't a closure, I think this doorknob idea http://www.paperclipping.com/2007/08/24/featured-project-dedra-longs-altered-book/ is soooo neat. Please share your ideas with the newbie. Thanks.
